Mission Statement
Yad Chessed Charity Fund was formed to help needy people primarily in the Boston area. The Fund provides financial assistance to needy individuals either in the form of
grants, monthly food certificates or loans.
If it is a grant, we do not give the money directly to the individual but rather use it to pay a bill such as to a grocery store for food or to a landlord
for rent. The maximum grant amount is $600.
People with a chronic need often receive monthly food certificates. These food certificates may be our own special certificates that can be used at local
kosher grocery stores (currently The Butcherie, Beacon Kosher and F.O.A. Food Services) and/or they may be supermarket gift certificates. Generally, the amount of assistance is between $50 and $100 a month.
For loans the borrower is expected to pay the money back in twelve equal monthly payments. As Jewish law prohibits usury, we are forbidden to charge any
interest on such loans. The maximum loan amount is $600. Larger amounts will be considered in two situations:
1. if the loan will be paid back in less than three months,
2. if there are co-signers to the loan note. In this case an additional $600 can be loaned for each co-signer.
Unlike other charities where 10%, 20%, 30% or more of a donor's contribution is used to pay for fundraising and administration, 0% of a donor's
contribution to Yad Chessed Charity Fund is used to pay for fundraising and administration. Since Yad Chessed is run entirely by volunteers, no funds are required for salaries and office rentals. Funds for any
remaining expenses are raised separately. Therefore, 100% of a donor's contribution is used for helping the needy unless the donor requests otherwise.
